Many educators now believe that traditional forms of academic evaluation (like the essay) are dying. The academic essay was once the best way to judge a student's knowledge, critical thinking, and personal voice. It has now become hijacked by technological shortcuts. Your instructors are feeling the deep frustration of spending hours grading papers while wondering whose work they're actually reading. They are on the front lines, facing a growing crisis that threatens the foundation of higher education: rampant cheating on essay assignments using generative AI.

In this new era, it's now possible to prompt large language models (LLMs) to do all your academic writing FOR you (in a matter of moments and for free).

The consequences of this: it undermines dishonest students over the long term, and hurts the honest students now: by ruining grading curves, stealing hard-earned opportunities, and making their genuine writing effort feel pointless.

We built Essay Major to tackle the essay cheating epidemic head-on. We designed our app to be an AI-powered tool that ALIGNS with higher education objectives: advancing scholarship and preserving academic integrity.

Essay Major wasn't created in a tech boardroom. It was born in the lecture halls, faculty lounges and grading sessions of higher education. 

Essay Major is not anti-AI. We believe that artificial intelligence is incredibly important and useful, but it is currently being driven by mainstream commercial models designed to make users dependent on their products. The more you use them, the more you need them.

We decided to leverage this technology to do the exact opposite.

We built an AI-powered app designed to foster real skill development so that, eventually, students don't need it at all.

Of course, building a software product that intentionally renders itself obsolete to each user is a terrible business model.

Yes, we know.

But as educators, we also know it is a necessary part of this kind of educational tool. We are using AI to REDUCE a student's dependency on it, guiding them until they can confidently write on their own.

Authenticity: We believe there is no substitute for original thought, struggle, and hard work.

Fairness: We are here to level the playing field so that honest students get the grades and recognition they actually deserve.

Real Learning: We want to shift the focus back to the actual process of growing and learning (by doing), rather than just faking a final product.
